SEO(SEM(IM(M)))
That would be Search Engine Optimization as a function of Search Engine Marketing as a function of Internet Marketing as a function of Marketing. Whew!!
Who cares? Right? Well, your customers do. Most, if not all, of the small businesses I run into don’t understand the purpose or place for search engine optimization. They all ask, “Well once you get it optimized, won’t it just be fine from there on out?” Well…no. Yes the code may remain optimized and the paragraphs may be well written, but you must understand that optimization is a function of search engine marketing.
Search engine marketing becomes a sub effort of internet marketing. Internet marketing is just one tactic for your whole marketing plan.
So
If marketing = the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling,
then,
internet marketing = the total of internet activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.
If intenet marketing = true
then,
search engine marketing = the total of internet activities involving search engines involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.
if search engine marketing = true
then,
search engine optimization = the process of choosing targeted keywords and keyword phrases related to a Web site so the site will rank high when those terms are part of the total of internet activities involving search engines involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.
Search engine optimization has a hard time fitting into a non-existent marketing plan for the business.
You must SEO with a marketing mindset. I am leaning towards never mentioning SEO again because people see optimization as a fix. It wasn’t optimized, now it is. Well…yes…and no. If you take your car in for a tune up it is now “tuned up.” But unless the 2nd law of thermodynamics is wrong, your car won’t “stay” “tuned up.” It will “tune down” or whatever the opposite is. The same is true for your website. It may be “optimized” right this second, but since the internet, customers, economies and technology are hardly static, it will become un-optimized. That is why I think I need to back up and explain this as internet marketing. Fussing over Facebook or forums or whatever is only optimizing for short run, but it is marketing for the long run. If your company established a healthy presence on a quality forum as part of my “SEO” efforts, then you are gaining alot more than links and traffic. You are gaining respect, expertise, exposure, and a host of other things than deal with more than just search engines and keywords. I can’t optimize your business to have a good name online and a respected brand. That is the job of marketing.
Some people just fuss over keywords. We fuss over your whole business.
Well, anyhow. Hope you enjoyed the Algebra 2 lesson. Please let me know what you think abou this.
