Diabetics are often told to mixed their foods. They categorize them into the speed at which they are metabolized into the body, or have benefit. This analogy or example strangely has great application when it comes to Keyword Marketing.

First are slow Carbs/Tactics. These are tactics that have a slow start, but long lasting effect. This would be old school link building. Requesting, purchasing or creating links to your site. Relevant links none the less.

Then come medium Carbs/Tactics. These are tactics that take effect more quickly, but their benefit may take a month or two to show the kind of benefit you are seeking. This may be some directory submission, Google maps, local directories, code revisions, and classified advertising.

Finally we have the fast Carbs/Tactics. These tactics take effect immediately and have results today. Usually this is PPC advertising, but it could also include social networking like Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn.

Our strategy is to mix slow medium and fast tactics at every level so that you are building the future as well as getting results now.

So just the other day I am doing research for a client who provides rodent control as part of his services among other things. He wanted to know how many people in Kansas search for mouse removal or mouse control or whatever variations to see where opportunities may lie. My results back from Google and Yahoo show me my inquiry and every similar variation in the last 30 days. So here is what it may look like.

I type in “mouse”

I get back results like this:

mickey mouse 3515 daily searches

of mice and men 933 daily searches

and so on.

Without fail, no matter what keyword or phrase I ask for stats on, there will definitely be some option with the word sex or porn in it. Health Insurance sex, plumber porn, oxygen tank sex. You can’t even imagine.

But this time I saw quite possibly the funniest and most disturbing stats

mickey mouse porn 131 daily searches

mickey mouse and goofy porn 4 daily searches

That means that nearly 50,000 times a year someone, some very lonely someone, is searching for that. These are things I would rather not know or have to consider as an SEO professional.

I will try to post other search oddities in the future.

Keyword: pizza

Optimization advice

General Page Properties

Page URL

Your keyword isn’t present in the URL. Our research reveals that the majority of top-ranked pages have their keywords in the URL. If you have an established site then we do not recommend changing the domains or page name, but it might be worth considering when developing pages in future.

General Properties

Your page uses internal CSS. While using internal CSS definitions is not a problem in itself, the search engines may take a dislike to this unnecessary content in your HTML. We recommend changing your design so that the CSS definitions are imported from an external file.

Main on-the-page factors influencing your ranking
<HEAD> area:

<TITLE> Tag

Title tag is not first tag in header. Your Title tag is not the first tag to appear in the Header. We recommend that you move your Title tag so it is the first listed in the Header.

Your Title tag has too few words. We recommend your Title tag should contain between 3 - 28 words, instead of 2 word(s) it has now. Try adding relevant words to your Title, but try to keep it as short as possible to give maximum weighting to your keywords.

Meta Description Tag

Your web page does not have a meta description tag. Your page should have a meta description tag in the area of the HTML, which will give a short description about your website.

Meta Keywords Tag

Your webpage does not have a meta keywords tag. Your page should have a meta keywords tag in the area of the HTML, which will list a series of relevant keywords that apply for your site.

<BODY> area:

Visible Text

Your page has too few words. We recommend you should have 120 to 1320 words, instead of the 23 you have now. Make your page more informative by adding more relavent content to the Body.

None of your keywords are in bold. By putting a certain keyword or phrase in bold tells the search engine that you place emphasis on these words. Naturally it considers these words more important than those in regular font.

None of your keywords are underlined. By putting underlining a certain keyword or phrase tells the search engine that you place emphasis on these words. Naturally it considers these words more important than those in regular font.

Your keyword is poorly presented throughout the page. Your keyword should appear at least 3 times in the visible area of your page (known as the <Body>), while it actually appears 1 times.

Your keyword prominence is too low on this this page. Your keyword prominence is only 0 while it should be at least 6%. If possible try to move your keyword closer to the beginning of your page to improve its prominence.

Your keyword is not present at the beginning of this page. Early appearances of your keyword shows its importance in the context of the entire page. Try to put your keyword as near to the start of the first paragraph <p> as is possible.

First Heading

Your keyword is not in your first heading. We recommend you should list your keyword in the first heading of your page. This will give emphasis to your keyword.

All Headings

You have no headings on your page. We recommend you should have at least one HTML heading on your page. We recommend using your headings to emphasize your keywords.

Link Text

Your keyword is not listed in the link text. You should try to include your keyword in the link text (anchor text) of some of the links on your page.

Alt Text

Your keyword is not in the alt text for any images on your page Search engines index the Alt tag for images, therefore it is important you include your keyword in the alt text.

Your keyword is not listed in the first three image alt tags on your page You should try to list your keyword in the first three alt tags on your page.

Your keyword weighting in the alt tag is not sufficient You should attempt to get a keyword weighting of 5%, your current weighting is 0.0%.

Website Optimization would be the oh-so-glamorous job of going through the code on your site and making sure that it/you are playing by the rules. The biggies are:

Title Tag

Description Tag

H1 Tag

Anchor Text

Paragraph Text

I know this doesn’t include alt img, img names, javascript, css, flash, h2-6, blah, blah, and blah. But code nerds worldwide would agree that if you are playing the game with those top 5 then the others really aren’t going to make up the difference.

Keyword Marketing may include website optimization, but it must include creating a positive influx of inbound links from relevant sites to your site via the particular keyword.

So, John wants me to optimize his website. I go into the code, clean it up, and bang, optimized website.

Not a whole lot different than if John wanted me to optimize his physical store. I go in, clean, organize, and bang, a better store. This does not mean that I have “marketed” his store, I just made it more efficient once I was there. However, if I go out and tell the whole town that John sells the best backpacks in town and I get 100 other local businesses to refer that business to him, now he has been marketed.

I am finding that the term SEO is becoming a Kleenex type term. You know, anything you blow your nose on is a Kleenex. I would say that currently SEO = Website Optimization + Keyword Marketing.

General Page Properties

Page URL

1. Your keyword isn’t present in the URL. Our research reveals that the majority of top-ranked pages have their keywords in the URL. If you have an established site then we do not recommend changing the domains or page name, but it might be worth considering when developing pages in future.

General Properties
1. Your page uses frames. Search engines find pages that use frames difficult to navigate and should therefore be avoided if possible. We recommend not using frames for your website if it can be avoided.
2. Your page uses internal Javascript. While using internal Javascript is not a problem in itself, the search engines may take a dislike to this unnecessary content in your HTML. We recommend changing your design so that your Javascript is imported from an external file.

Main on-the-page factors influencing your ranking
<HEAD> area:

<TITLE> Tag
1. Your keyword is not present in your Title. The Title tag is very important for keyword optimization. We therefore recommend you place your keyword in your Title tag.

Meta Description Tag
1. Your web page does not have a meta description tag. Your page should have a meta description tag in the area of the HTML, which will give a short description about your website.

Meta Keywords Tag
1. Your webpage does not have a meta keywords tag. Your page should have a meta keywords tag in the area of the HTML, which will list a series of relevant keywords that apply for your site.

<BODY> area:

Visible Text
1. Your page has too few words. We recommend you should have 120 to 1320 words, instead of the 3 you have now. Make your page more informative by adding more relavent content to the Body.
2. None of your keywords are in bold. By putting a certain keyword or phrase in bold tells the search engine that you place emphasis on these words. Naturally it considers these words more important than those in regular font.
3. None of your keywords are underlined. By putting underlining a certain keyword or phrase tells the search engine that you place emphasis on these words. Naturally it considers these words more important than those in regular font.
4. Your keyword is poorly presented throughout the page. Your keyword should appear at least 3 times in the visible area of your page (known as the <Body>), while it actually appears 0 times.
5. Your keyword prominence is too low on this this page. Your keyword prominence is only 0 while it should be at least 6%. If possible try to move your keyword closer to the beginning of your page to improve its prominence.
6. Your keyword doesn’t have enough weight on this page. It must constitute at least 1%, while your page has only 0. Try to increase the keyword weight so it amounts to 1-10% of the total visible text.
7. Your keyword is not present at the beginning of this page. Early appearances of your keyword shows its importance in the context of the entire page. Try to put your keyword as near to the start of the first paragraph <p> as is possible.
8. Your keyword is not present at the end of this page. Your page will be more relevant if your keyword appears at the end of the visible text. Try to put your keyword in the last paragraph of your page.

First Heading
1. Your keyword is not in your first heading. We recommend you should list your keyword in the first heading of your page. This will give emphasis to your keyword.

All Headings
1. Your keyword is not in any of your headings. We recommend you should try to list your keyword in the headings of your page. This will give additional emphasis to your keyword.
2. Your keyword weighting is too low across your headings. You need to improve your keyword weighting in your headings. Do this by removing unnecessary words from your headings, this will give your keyword more weighting. You should aim for a weighting of 5%, yours is currently 0.0%.

Link Text
1. Your keyword is not listed in the link text. You should try to include your keyword in the link text (anchor text) of some of the links on your page.

Alt Text
1. Your keyword is not in the alt text for any images on your page Search engines index the Alt tag for images, therefore it is important you include your keyword in the alt text.
2. Your keyword is not listed in the first three image alt tags on your page You should try to list your keyword in the first three alt tags on your page.
3. Your keyword weighting in the alt tag is not sufficient You should attempt to get a keyword weighting of 5%, your current weighting is 0%.

That would be Search Engine Optimization as a function of Search Engine Marketing as a function of Internet Marketing as a function of Marketing. Whew!!

Who cares? Right? Well, your customers do. Most, if not all, of the small businesses I run into don’t understand the purpose or place for search engine optimization. They all ask, “Well once you get it optimized, won’t it just be fine from there on out?” Well…no. Yes the code may remain optimized and the paragraphs may be well written, but you must understand that optimization is a function of search engine marketing.

Search engine marketing becomes a sub effort of internet marketing. Internet marketing is just one tactic for your whole marketing plan.

So

If marketing = the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling,

then,

internet marketing = the total of internet activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.

If intenet marketing = true

then,

search engine marketing = the total of internet activities involving search engines involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.

if search engine marketing = true

then,

search engine optimization = the process of choosing targeted keywords and keyword phrases related to a Web site so the site will rank high when those terms are part of the total of internet activities involving search engines involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling.

Search engine optimization has a hard time fitting into a non-existent marketing plan for the business.

You must SEO with a marketing mindset. I am leaning towards never mentioning SEO again because people see optimization as a fix. It wasn’t optimized, now it is. Well…yes…and no. If you take your car in for a tune up it is now “tuned up.” But unless the 2nd law of thermodynamics is wrong, your car won’t “stay” “tuned up.” It will “tune down” or whatever the opposite is. The same is true for your website. It may be “optimized” right this second, but since the internet, customers, economies and technology are hardly static, it will become un-optimized. That is why I think I need to back up and explain this as internet marketing. Fussing over Facebook or forums or whatever is only optimizing for short run, but it is marketing for the long run. If your company established a healthy presence on a quality forum as part of my “SEO” efforts, then you are gaining alot more than links and traffic. You are gaining respect, expertise, exposure, and a host of other things than deal with more than just search engines and keywords. I can’t optimize your business to have a good name online and a respected brand. That is the job of marketing.

Some people just fuss over keywords. We fuss over your whole business.

1. Links - Most of these classified sites allow links to your site in their “services” section. While these links are not permanent, they do count and you are in control of the anchor text.

2. Ad response - People who view the ads could: click to contact the advertiser, call the phone number in the ad or click to view the website.

3. Exposure - Because most of the big boys have multiple cities, we advertise different keywords in different geographies on a rotating basis. This gives my clients excellent coverage without “double dipping” the same ad in multiple cities.

I would love your feedback on this one.

I just read this definition of chaos theory: “The idea that seemingly minor events accumulate to have complex and massive effects on dynamic natural systems.”

This holds true for most sites that approach us for SEO. Those “seemingly minor events” often are your keywords sprinkled about your site in a complete mess.

The simple way to fix this disorder is to create order. I suggest one keyword or phrase as a theme per web page. So if you have a webpage about narcolepsy, don’t also have the same page cover the extensive topics of polysomnography, sleep apnea, and cpap titration. Think of your site as an outline. Each keyword has a line in the outline. Some items are bracketed in, some are headings. Or think of it is as a web graph. One idea per bubble with all of the bubbles connecting.

Because the internet is all about clutter, try to declutter your site and content. Please do not make your user dig and decipher and wade through every topic under the sun. The place to have a list of all of your products and services is on your products and services page.

Visit wikipedia again sometime and see how one topic is on one page and links to other pages with related topics. This is similar to how the human brain store information.

www.solhaam.org states that our brain is

“continually associating new information with older information, and older information with other older information, is much more than random cross-referencing.

It is because of the meaningful way in which we associate over such large volumes of stored information, that the process of associating amounts also to the seeking of meaningful associations.”

The key to that statement is associations. There must be some order of information that is associated to other information.

I often ask this question. If someone visits my site and lands on this page and this page only, does it make sense? Do they understand what I am talking about and what it has to do with anything? Does it leave them wanting more and if so, is that “more” easy to get to from there?
