Diabetics are often told to mixed their foods. They categorize them into the speed at which they are metabolized into the body, or have benefit.This analogy or example strangely has great application when it comes to Keyword Marketing.

First are slow Carbs/Tactics. These are tactics that have a slow start, but long lasting effect. This would be old school link building. Requesting, purchasing or creating links to your site. Relevant links none the less.

Then come medium Carbs/Tactics. These are tactics that take effect more quickly, but their benefit may take a month or two to show the kind of benefit you are seeking. This may be some directory submission, Google maps, local directories, code revisions, and classified advertising.

Finally we have the fast Carbs/Tactics....

Mickey Mouse Porn

So just the other day I am doing research for a client who provides rodent control as part of his services among other things. He wanted to know how many people in Kansas search for mouse removal or mouse control or whatever variations to see where opportunities may lie. My results back from Google and Yahoo show me my inquiry and every similar variation in the last 30 days. So here is what it may look like.

I type in “mouse”

I get back results like this:

mickey mouse 3515 daily searches

of mice and men 933 daily searches

and so on.

Without fail, no matter what keyword or phrase I ask for stats on, there will definitely be some option with the word sex or porn in it. Health Insurance sex, plumber porn, oxygen tank sex. You can’t...

Oodle Juiced!

As of this week I have been unable post hyperlinks of any type within my oodle.com listings. I wish these classified people would make up their minds. Last week I posted 3 ads in one hour.

Ad 1: link works

Ad 2: links don’t work

Ad 3: links work but they are nofollow

Geez.

Website Optimization vs. Keyword Marketing

I thought it was high time to have a “vs.” in the old blog.

Website Optimization would be the oh-so-glamorous job of going through the code on your site and making sure that it/you are playing by the rules. The biggies are:

  1. Title Tag
  2. Description Tag
  3. H1 Tag
  4. Anchor Text
  5. Paragraph Text

I know this doesn’t include alt img, img names, javascript, css, flash, h2-6, blah, blah, and blah. But code nerds worldwide would agree that if you are playing the game with those top 5 then the others really aren’t going to make up the difference.

Keyword Marketing may include website optimization, but it must include creating a positive influx of inbound links from relevant sites to your site via the particular...

That would be Search Engine Optimization as a function of Search Engine Marketing as a function of Internet Marketing as a function of Marketing. Whew!!

Who cares? Right? Well, your customers do. Most, if not all, of the small businesses I run into don’t understand the purpose or place for search engine optimization. They all ask, “Well once you get it optimized, won’t it just be fine from there on out?” Well…no. Yes the code may remain optimized and the paragraphs may be well written, but you must understand that optimization is a function of search engine marketing.

Search engine marketing becomes a sub effort of internet marketing. Internet marketing is just one tactic for your whole marketing plan.

Free Classified Ads

Craigslist, Oodle and the like. What is the purpose you might ask?  Here are a few ways classified ads are helping my SEO clients.

1. Links - Most of these classified sites allow links to your site in their “services” section. While these links are not permanent, they do count and you are in control of the anchor text.

2. Ad response - People who view the ads could: click to contact the advertiser, call the phone number in the ad or click to view the website.

3. Exposure - Because most of the big boys have multiple cities, we advertise different keywords in different geographies on a rotating basis. This gives my clients excellent coverage without “double dipping” the same ad in multiple cities.

Keyword chaos

I just read this definition of chaos theory: “The idea that seemingly minor events accumulate to have complex and massive effects on dynamic natural systems.”

This holds true for most sites that approach us for SEO. Those “seemingly minor events” often are your keywords sprinkled about your site in a complete mess.

The simple way to fix this disorder is to create order. I suggest one keyword or phrase as a theme per web page. So if you have a webpage about narcolepsy, don’t also have the same page cover the extensive topics of polysomnography, sleep apnea, and cpap titration. Think of your site as an outline. Each keyword has a line in the outline. Some items are bracketed in, some are headings. Or think of it is as a web graph. One...
